This critical role will be instrumental in maintaining the integrity of our financial records, with a specialized focus on ensuring accuracy in our accounting records and seamless reconciliation of all transactions flowing through Belema's cutting-edge FinTech platforms. You will be a key player in optimizing our settlement processes and supporting our mission to deliver swift, secure, and seamless financial services.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Comprehensive Transaction Reconciliation: Execute daily, weekly, and monthly reconciliation of all financial transactions across Belema's diverse payment gateways, acquiring banks, issuing banks, and internal systems (e.g., Belema Pay, Switching & Processing). Proactively identify, investigate, and resolve any discrepancies to ensure all transactions are accurately recorded, settled, and reported.
End-to-End Settlement Management: Oversee and manage the complete settlement lifecycle for various Belema products and services, ensuring timely and precise payouts to merchants, partners, and customers across different African markets.
General Ledger & Financial Accuracy: Prepare and post precise journal entries related to all transaction clearings and settlements. Maintain and reconcile general ledger accounts, ensuring strict adherence to accounting standards (IFRS/GAAP) and internal controls.
Financial Reporting & Analysis Support: Contribute to the accurate and timely preparation of financial statements, management reports, and crucial financial analyses by providing meticulously reconciled transaction data.
Payment Network & Partner Liaison: Monitor and reconcile activities with payment processors, card networks (Visa, Mastercard), and banking institutions. Act as a primary point of contact for resolving any settlement or transaction-related issues with these key partners.
Process Optimization & Automation: Continuously identify and champion opportunities to enhance, streamline, and automate Belema's accounting and settlement processes, aiming to improve efficiency, reduce manual effort, and minimize errors.
Audit & Regulatory Compliance: Actively support internal and external audits by providing comprehensive documentation and clear explanations of transaction flows and reconciliation procedures. Ensure all financial operations comply with relevant regulatory requirements in the markets we operate.
Cross-functional Collaboration: Partner closely with our operations, engineering, product development, and customer support teams to swiftly resolve transaction-related queries, address system discrepancies, and collaboratively optimize overall financial workflows.
Knowledge:
- Comprehensive knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles relevant to financial services, especially revenue recognition, expense accruals, and balance sheet reconciliation.
- In-depth understanding of payment processing flows, including payment gateways, acquiring banks, issuing banks, card schemes (Visa, Mastercard), mobile money operators, digital wallets, and interbank settlement processes.
- Knowledge of various reconciliation techniques (e.g., bank reconciliation, GL reconciliation, payment reconciliation) and best practices for identifying and resolving discrepancies.
- Awareness of relevant financial regulations and compliance requirements impacting payment processing and accounting in Nigeria/Africa (e.g., CBN guidelines, AML/CFT, data privacy laws).
- Familiarity with the accounting treatment and settlement nuances of various financial products relevant to Belema (e.g., digital loans, mobile money transactions, cross-border payments).
- Knowledge of internal control frameworks relevant to financial operations to ensure data integrity and prevent fraud.

- Professional certification (e.g., ACCA, ACA, CPA, ICAN) is a strong advantage
