Volunteer UI/UX Designer (Pregnancy Support App Design)
Location: Remote (Global, with preference for individuals in the WAT timezone for collaboration) Time Commitment: Flexible (estimated 5-10 hours/week, negotiable based on project phase and individual availability) Duration: Project-based, until MVP (Minimum Viable Product) launch and beyond
About the Project
We're building a life-changing mobile application designed to provide essential support and reliable information to pregnant mothers, especially those in underserved communities. Our mission is to empower mothers with knowledge, connect them to vital resources, and foster a supportive community during their pregnancy journey. This is a passion project driven by the desire to make a significant positive impact on maternal health outcomes.
The Opportunity
Are you a talented UI/UX Designer passionate about creating intuitive, beautiful, and impactful digital experiences for social good? Do you want to use your design skills to genuinely improve lives? We're looking for a dedicated volunteer UI/UX Designer to help shape the user experience and visual interface of our pregnancy support app. This is a unique chance to:
- Make a tangible difference: Your design will directly impact how easily and effectively pregnant mothers access vital information and support.
- Build your portfolio: Contribute to a real-world application from the ground up, gaining valuable experience in health tech and user-centered design.
- Collaborate with a passionate team: Work alongside like-minded volunteers in development, content, and project management.
- Design with empathy: Focus on creating an accessible and comforting experience for a particularly vulnerable user group.
Summary of the Role
As a Volunteer UI/UX Designer, you will be instrumental in defining the look, feel, and flow of our mobile application. You'll be responsible for transforming user needs and project goals into engaging and intuitive user interfaces. Your work will directly impact how easily and comfortably pregnant mothers navigate and utilize the app.
What Success in This Position Looks Like
Success in this role means designing a user experience that is not only visually appealing but also incredibly intuitive, accessible, and empathetic to the needs of pregnant mothers. You will deliver clear wireframes, mockups, and prototypes that effectively communicate your design solutions. Your success will be evident in positive user feedback and a seamless, engaging experience that encourages consistent use of the app, ultimately contributing to better maternal health outcomes.
How This Role Fits into the Organization Overall
This Volunteer UI/UX Designer role is fundamental to the app's success. You will work closely with the Project Manager to define features, collaborate extensively with Mobile App Developers to ensure your designs are feasible and correctly implemented, and potentially work with Content Specialists to integrate information seamlessly. You are the advocate for the user, ensuring that the app is not just functional, but genuinely helpful and enjoyable to use. Without a strong design, even the best functionality can be lost on users.
What You'll Do (Responsibilities)
As a Volunteer UI/UX Designer, you will be responsible for:
- Conducting user research (even informal, if resources are limited) to understand the needs and pain points of pregnant mothers.
- Creating wireframes, user flows, and storyboards to define the app's structure and user journey.
- Developing high-fidelity mockups and prototypes that bring the app's visual design to life.
- Designing an intuitive, accessible, and empathetic user interface suitable for a health-focused app.
- Ensuring design consistency across all screens and features.
- Collaborating closely with developers to ensure the feasibility and accurate implementation of designs.
- Iterating on designs based on feedback and usability testing (if applicable).
- Contributing to the overall brand identity and visual guidelines of the app.
Who We're Looking For (Required Skills & Experience)
- Proven experience in UI/UX design for mobile applications (iOS and/or Android).
- Proficiency with design software such as Figma, Adobe XD, Sketch, or similar tools.
- Strong understanding of user-centered design principles and best practices.
- Ability to create clear wireframes, mockups, and interactive prototypes.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
- A portfolio demonstrating your UI/UX design work, especially for mobile apps.
- A genuine passion for social impact and improving maternal health outcomes.
- Reliable internet connection and ability to commit consistent hours.
Bonus Points (Nice-to-Have Skills)
- Experience with user research methodologies and usability testing.
- Familiarity with accessibility standards for mobile applications.
- Experience designing for health or sensitive data applications. Basic understanding of mobile development limitations or possibilities.
