The Living Room is a boutique restaurant space under the YellowDoor group, known for thoughtful service, layered comfort, and an ever-evolving menu that blends creativity with warmth. It’s where guests come to slow down, connect, and experience food that’s familiar yet fresh.
We’re now looking for a strong, skilled, and dependable Sous Chef who will help lead the kitchen, execute at a consistently high standard, and grow with us as we refine and expand our food experiences.
Role Summary
The Sous Chef is the second-in-command in the kitchen and plays a core leadership role in both service execution and back-of-house operations. You’ll work closely with the Head Chef to bring our dishes to life, making sure every plate meets The Living Room’s standard for taste, timing, and presentation. You’ll also take responsibility for managing kitchen admin, enforcing hygiene, and helping to train and guide junior staff.
This is a role for someone who can own the line during busy services, manage the rhythm of a team, and contribute to the evolution of a respected kitchen culture.
What You’ll Be Responsible For
Kitchen & Food Execution
- Oversee line setup, prep, and station readiness before each shift
- Lead cooking and plating during busy services — ensuring timing, consistency, and portion control
- Execute all dishes according to The Living Room’s presentation and flavor standards
- Monitor and ensure the quality of food leaving the pass
Kitchen Administration & Systems
- Maintain and update prep logs, wastage sheets, stock records, and cleaning schedules
- Track kitchen expenses and contribute to cost control
- Ensure food storage, labelling, and FIFO (first-in-first-out) practices
- Collaborate with the Head Chef on ordering, inventory planning, and menu prep schedules
Team Management & Support
- Guide and mentor line cooks, prep staff, and kitchen assistants
- Step in to lead the team when the Head Chef is off-site or off-duty
- Help onboard new kitchen staff and ensure they understand YellowDoor kitchen culture
- Give real-time feedback to staff during service to maintain quality and discipline
Hygiene & Compliance
- Enforce daily and weekly cleaning procedures across all kitchen zones
- Ensure strict adherence to food safety and HACCP regulations
- Stay ready for surprise inspections — ensure documentation is always up to date
Required Skills & Experience
- Minimum 3–5 years experience in a professional kitchen, with at least 1–2 years in a leadership or senior cook role
- Strong command of food prep, timing, knife skills, and plating
- Ability to manage a team and communicate clearly under pressure
- Familiarity with kitchen paperwork, logs, and basic food costing
- Commitment to hygiene, consistency, and accountability
- Reliable, trustworthy, and proactive
Bonus Points
- Experience in Afro-fusion, continental, or comfort-style cuisine
- Worked in boutique restaurants, upscale cafés, or hospitality brands
- Comfortable using Google Sheets or digital logs for kitchen admin
- Passion for developing younger chefs and building team morale
