Job Description/Requirements
Responsibilities:
- Animal Care: As a Livestock Technician at MDNI Farms, you shall be responsible for the daily care of the goats, which includes feeding, watering, and ensuring they have access to clean and appropriate nutrition.
- You must also monitor the health and well-being of the goats, identifying and addressing any health issues promptly
- Herd Management: Technicians assist in managing the goat herd, which involves breeding, kidding, and ensuring proper record-keeping.
- Breeding and Genetics: Maintain accurate breeding and performance records.
- Implement genetic selection and improvement programs while reporting directly to the director and Operations Manager.
- Reproductive Health and Breeding: Support the farm’s breeding efforts by performing reproductive health checks, assisting with sorting the goats based on BCS, and monitoring pregnant does and newborn kids.
- You will advise on optimal breeding cycles, ensure healthy pregnancies, and assist with difficult births as needed.
- Feeding and Nutrition Management: Plan and manage feeding schedules based on livestock nutritional needs, including growth, reproduction, and lactation stages.
- Monitor feed consumption and adjust rations as necessary to optimize productivity.
- Ensure all feeding equipment is clean and in proper working condition.
- Housing and Facility Maintenance: Ensure livestock housing is clean, well-maintained, and adequately ventilated.
- Conduct routine inspections of housing and pasture areas to identify and address any hazards.
- Biosecurity Implementation: Enforce biosecurity protocols to prevent the introduction and spread of diseases.
- Educate staff and visitors on farm biosecurity policies and ensure compliance. Regularly monitor and control pests and rodents around the farm.
- Record-Keeping and Reporting: Maintain comprehensive records of livestock health, breeding, feeding, and production.
- Prepare and submit routine reports on livestock performance and farm activities. Ensure compliance with regulatory standards related to livestock farming.
Requirements:
- HND in Animal Sciences or a related field is mandatory.
- A Degree in Veterinary Medicine is an added advantage.
- Minimum of 2-3 years of hands-on experience in livestock management.
- Strong understanding of animal health, nutrition, and reproductive management.
- Proficient in record-keeping and reporting.
- Excellent communication and team collaboration skills.
- Ability to work in a physically demanding environment. Passion for livestock care and a commitment to animal welfare.
