Position Summary:
The Farm Veterinarian will play a critical role in maintaining the overall health and productivity of our livestock. This position involves preventative care, diagnostics, treatment, and guidance on nutrition, breeding, housing, and hygiene tailored to the needs of meat goat production. The veterinarian will work closely with the husbandry team and management to ensure optimal animal welfare and contribute to the farm’s breeding goals.
Key Responsibilities:
Diagnose and treat illnesses and injuries in goats through physical exams, lab tests, and on-farm observation.
Administer vaccines, dewormers, antibiotics, and other preventive and curative treatments.
Perform minor surgeries, wound care, obstetrics, and emergency interventions as needed.
Conduct post-mortem examinations to determine the cause of death and recommend preventive actions.
Monitor and support herd health programs, including PPR, anti-abortion, and anti-mastitis protocols.
Guide farm staff on best practices in nutrition, breeding, housing, hygiene, and disease prevention.
Maintain accurate and up-to-date medical records for all animals.
Supervise and mentor animal health technicians and husbandry staff on best practices for animal care and husbandry.
Contribute to research and continuous improvement on goat health, feed conversion, and productivity.
Support biosecurity compliance and protocols across the farm.
Qualifications and Requirements:
Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree from a recognized institution
Valid license to practice veterinary medicine in Nigeria
Minimum 3 years of experience in livestock practice, preferably with goats or small ruminants
Practical knowledge of meat goat production systems, vaccination schedules, and endemic disease control
Strong diagnostic, surgical, and communication skills
Ability to train and lead support staff
Commitment to animal welfare, farm integrity, and teamwork
