Job Description/Requirements
We are seeking a dynamic and hands-on Agricultural Scientist to join our team in Senegal. This role involves working closely with fertilizer formulations developed and tested in our Singapore laboratory, preparing them on-site, conducting field trials, and collecting agronomic and microbial data. The ideal candidate will have a solid background in soil microbiology, fermentation, composting, and experimental agronomy, and will play a key role in maintaining soil health by incorporating organic inputs into field practices.
Job Responsibilities
Fertilizer Preparation and Application
- Prepare and process fertilizer formulations based on protocols and specifications developed in the Singapore lab.
- Carry out basic fermentation procedures involving soil microbes to produce biofertilizers.
- Handle soil microbial strains including nitrogen-fixers, phosphate solubilizers, and other beneficial bacteria.
Soil Health and Organic Inputs
- Promote and test soil-restorative practices including cover cropping, compost application, and minimal tillage.
- Develop and validate organic and regenerative input systems using locally available materials
- Monitor soil health indicators such as C:N ratio, microbial biomass, and nutrient levels.
Field Trials and Data Collection
- Design and execute controlled experiments and field trials to evaluate fertilizer efficacy on various crops.
- Monitor plant growth parameters (germination rate, biomass, yield, root/shoot length) and record detailed observations.
- Set up and maintain proper experimental plots for accurate and repeatable testing.
Vermiculture & Composting
- Conduct vermiculture trials under semi-arid field conditions with support from the Singapore team.
- Develop and optimize compost formulations suitable for local conditions and resources.
- Evaluate compost and vermicompost effectiveness on soil fertility, moisture retention and crop performance.
Troubleshooting & Innovation
- Identify and resolve technical issues during formulation preparation, microbial fermentation, and field application.
- Propose and develop innovative, low-cost solutions tailored to local agricultural challenges.
- Adapt protocols where necessary based on field limitations and observed outcomes.
Reporting & Communication
- Document all experimental protocols, results, and observations clearly.
- Provide regular updates and reports to the Singapore R&D team. Participate in virtual and in-person meetings to present findings and suggest improvements.
Education and Certifications
- Bachelor’s, MSc or PhD in Agronomy, Soil Science or related field.
Experience
- At least 3 years of hands-on experience with soil microbes, biofertilizer production, or field agronomy.
- Proficient in handling microbial cultures, fermentation systems, and basic soil lab techniques.
- Experience in composting, vermiculture, and sustainable agriculture practices is a strong advantage.
Skills
