We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Private Equity Senior Associate to join our team. This role is integral to providing strategic legal support to our private equity clients and ensuring the delivery of exceptional service.
JOB SUMMARY
We are seeking an experienced and commercially astute Senior Associate to join our Energy Practice. The ideal candidate will bring deep legal expertise and industry insight across the oil and gas, power (including renewable energy) sectors. This role involves leading complex transactions (overseeing legal structuring, managing regulatory compliance, mitigating legal risks), managing client relationships, and mentoring junior lawyers.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Advise clients on a broad range of energy-related matters, including upstream, midstream, and downstream oil and gas operations, power sector (including renewable energy) transactions.
- Draft, review, negotiate and finalize project and commercial contracts, agreements and other legal documents.
- Provide regulatory and compliance advice on legal frameworks including licensing, permits, local content compliance, environmental regulations, and interface with relevant government agencies within the energy sector.
- Manage and contribute to large-scale project development and project finance transactions in the energy sector.
- Lead due diligence exercises and risk assessments for transactions and regulatory submissions.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, regulators, and industry stakeholders.
- Regularly mentor younger lawyers within the Energy practice in order to foster a culture of continuous learning and professional development.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, understand their needs, leading client meetings, and providing strategic advice tailored to their goals.
- Work closely with partners on high-profile and complex transactions, providing strategic input and support throughout the process.
- Contribute to decision-making processes by participating in the Firm’s committees and shaping Firm policies.
- Identify and capitalize on new business opportunities to drive the growth of the Firm.
- Actively participate in industry events to enhance the Firm’s visibility.
- Regularlylead knowledge-sharing sessions, publish thought leadership articles, and staying commercially aware.
QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
- Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) and B.L qualification from the Nigerian Law School. A relevant LLM/MBA or Masters’ Degree, or any other relevant professional certification is an advantage.
- Minimum of 8 years post-call experience in a top-tier law firm or in-house legal department with a strong focus on energy project development and/or energy finance.
- Proven experience handling complex energy transactions and regulatory matters.
- Sound understanding of the regulatory frameworks within the Nigerian energy sector as well as stakeholders in the global energy sector.
- Strong leadership, project management, and communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and work effectively under pressure.
- Advanced expertise in drafting, reviewing, and negotiating complex legal documents that are error-free, commercially sound, and client-aligned.
- Proficiency in conducting thorough legal research and applying findings for creative problem-solving.
- Strong understanding of regulatory requirements in energy, finance, securities, and private equity sectors.
- Exceptional client relationship management skills, with the ability to anticipate and address client needs effectively.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a focus on delivering commercially sound legal solutions.
- Excellent leadership, mentoring, and team management abilities.
- High level of professionalism, ethical standards, and integrity.
- Associatemembership in industry associations such as Energy Institute, Nigerian Gas Association, AMDA or AIEN is an advantage.
