We’re hiring a Managing Editor to be the operational centre of gravity of this newsroom.
About the role
As Managing Editor, you’ll own the daily rhythm and of TechCabal’s work. You’ll coach editors and reporters, sharpen ideas, and ship with discipline. You’ll help enforce standards, protect our independence, and relentlessly pursue clarity. You’ll also work with multiple teams across Big Cabal, our parent company, to drive TechCabal’s objectives.
Responsibilities
- Conceive, source, research, and write 3 in-depth articles per week, focusing on the Fintech industry.
- Source and write at least 3-4 quick news stories per week about the latest developments in Fintech.
- Write for newsletters as required, particularly on Fintech trends and insights.
- Enhance the reputation of the publication with engaging and high-impact human-angle stories centered on the pan-African Fintech landscape.
- Executing projects as assigned by the News Editor, Deputy News Editor, or Editor-in-Chief.
- Developing and maintaining relationships with decision-makers in the Fintech sector, as well as relevant government and business leaders.
- Participating in company-sourced training and engaging in skill development programs to stay updated on the evolving Fintech industry.
Requirements
Editorial Leadership
- Oversee the editorial engine, ensuring a steady flow of high-quality stories, including news reports, features, analysis, and multi-format editorial projects.
- Lead, mentor, and manage a diverse team of writers, editors, and contributors. Provide guidance on story development, editing, and best practices.
- Partner with support teams (Growth, Tech, Production, etc) to drive our core objectives.
- Uphold the highest journalistic standards, ensuring accuracy, clarity, and integrity in all published content.
Strategy
- Develop and implement strategies that align with TechCabal’s mission to be the definitive source of stories of how technology is shaping Africa.
- Shape a forward calendar across beats and formats with a Pan-African aperture.
- Utilise analytics to guide editorial decisions and improve content performance across all platforms.
Innovation
- Drive content innovation by working with the team to explore new formats, technologies, and storytelling methods. Launch journalism experiments that push the boundaries of traditional media.
- Stay ahead of industry trends and explore new formats and platforms for delivering content, including podcasts, video, and newsletters.
You’re a Great Fit If:
- You have at least 6 years of experience shaping stories and narrative, with at least 2 of those in editorial, intelligence or storytelling leadership.
- You have a deep understanding of the African tech ecosystem and where they intersect with global tech trends.
- You have great taste and craft – in writing, editing, and storytelling. You have a strong sense of narrative and attention to detail.
- You’re comfortable with working in a truly, truly fast-paced environment, have excellent communication skills and collaborate well with people.
- You’re excited about doing groundbreaking work that will shape the future of technology reporting in Africa.
