Program Background
EduKAiT is the main platform for the Australian Government’s support to the Kiribati Education sector, specifically the Government of Kiribati and Ministry of Education (MoE), as it implements its Education Sector Strategic Plan (ESSP 2024-27).
The program will be implemented in two five-year phases over 10 years. Phase 1 includes an emphasis on Literacy and Language for School Years 1-3, and gender and increased English proficiency for School Years 7–9 and address the high Year 9 dropout rate for boys.

The Role
The Curriculum Materials Writer is responsible for the design of eighteen (18) sets of activities that align with the existing Year 3 program and correlate with the existing Year 4 syllabus for English. Advice as to how this syllabus might be enhanced would be welcomed.
As per the agreed design for the EduKAiT program, the activities will contain several features that must be included to continue the work started in the Year 3 program:

  • Text-based approach that takes into account the various levels of language (text, paragraph, sentence, word, sound and letter knowledge).
  • An explicit pedagogy that links reading and writing (e.g. Derewinaka & Jones, 2023) and encourages active language production and use by students.
  • Explicit advice around bilingual practice, in accordance with the National Language Policy.
  • Clear, direct advice to teachers with ideas to adapt and extend language beyond the book.
  • A strong link to what has been taught in Year 3.
  • Match the current Kiribati Ministry of Education Year 4 syllabus for English.
  • Integration of culturally relevant content and examples, where appropriate, to enhance engagement and relevance.

Selection Criteria

  • Postgraduate qualifications in sociolinguistics, preferably including TESOL, with deep knowledge of English structures and usage.
  • Over 5 years’ experience in developing language teaching programs or materials for classroom use. 10 years’ experience will be preferred.
  • Experience in primary school settings desirable, particularly in development/Pacific settings.

Skills And Abilities

  • High level of knowledge and deep understanding of literacy development in primary-aged children and language teaching for children.
  • Strong analysis and synthesis skills, in order to identify learning needs and design content aligned with curriculum levels and learning outcomes.
  • Knowledge of how first languages might be used to learn English.
  • Ability to write clearly in English for teachers to follow.
  • High level of skill in editing, formatting and proofreading for clarity and accuracy.
