Job Description/Requirements
The UN Volunteer will support the International Organization for Migration (IOM) Nigeria’s Sub-office in Benin City, which implements programs on migration governance, counter-trafficking, and migrant protection. Benin City is a hub for human trafficking and irregular migration, requiring robust policy advocacy and capacity-building efforts.
The volunteer will contribute to research, stakeholder engagement, and awareness campaigns to strengthen protection mechanisms and reduce vulnerabilities. Under the direct supervision of the Head of Benin Sub-Office, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:
Responsibilities
- Assist in analysing national/regional migration policies, with a focus on counter-trafficking frameworks, gaps, and compliance with international standards.
- Contribute to drafting policy briefs, reports, and recommendations for government and NGO partners.
- Support the compilation of migration trends and trafficking data through desk reviews, surveys, and stakeholder interviews.
- Help maintain databases and visualize findings (e.g., dashboards, maps) to inform programming.
- Participate in meetings with government, UN agencies, and civil society to strengthen migration governance coordination.
- Document outcomes and action points for follow-up by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) teams.
- Contribute to organizing workshops/training sessions on migration policy, victim protection, and rights-based approaches.
- Assist in preparing advocacy materials (e.g., presentations, policy position papers).
- Collaborate with the International Organization for Migration (IOM)’s protection and counter-trafficking teams to integrate policy findings into operational responses. Support monitoring and evaluation efforts to assess policy impact.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in International relations, Law, Public Policy, Development Studies, or related field. No experience required.
Required Skills
- Demonstrated interest or experience in:
- Migration governance, counter-trafficking, or human rights.
- Strong analytical, writing, and presentation skills; familiarity with qualitative/quantitative data tools (e.g., Excel, NVivo) is an asset.
- Previous experience as a volunteer and/or experience of another culture, (i.e. studies, volunteer work, internship) would be highly regarded.
- Policy drafting and stakeholder coordination (e.g., supporting policy reviews, meeting facilitation). Data collection and visualization (e.g., surveys, dashboards, or other tools for migration trends).
Preferred Skills
Area(s) of expertise: Communication, Development programmes, Legal affairs.This assignment is funded by the Government of Korea and therefore specific criteria apply:
- Candidates must be Korean nationals.
- Candidates must be between 22 and 29 years of age at the time of application.
- Candidates who have already served as UN Youth Volunteer funded by the Government of Korea are not eligible to apply (former UN University Volunteers are eligible).
- Serving UN Volunteers will not be considered for other UN Volunteer assignments until they reach three (3) months before the End of Contract date of their current UN Volunteer assignment. This provision applies equally to first and subsequent contracts.
- Candidates may apply to a maximum of three assignments and indicate the order of preference in the ‘Additional remarks’ field when filling in the application form. Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted. The selection will be done by the UN Host Entity at the level of the country of assignment.
