Job Summary:
The Mental Health Nurse in the Behavioural and Mental Health Unit will provide high-quality nursing care to patients with psychiatric, emotional, and behavioural disorders. This role involves direct patient care, mental health monitoring, administering prescribed treatments, and supporting therapeutic interventions in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide direct nursing care to patients in the behavioural and mental health unit, ensuring safety and dignity at all times.
- Administer prescribed medications, monitor effects, and report changes in patient condition to the attending physician.
- Conduct mental status assessments and record behavioural observations accurately in patient charts.
- Assist in implementing therapeutic programs, group activities, and behaviour management plans.
- Support patients in daily living activities and encourage independence where possible.
- Manage psychiatric emergencies effectively, following hospital protocols.
- Educate patients and families on treatment plans, medication adherence, and coping strategies.
- Collaborate with psychiatrists, psychologists, occupational therapists, and other healthcare professionals to provide holistic care.
- Maintain confidentiality and uphold professional standards in line with hospital policies and medico-legal requirements.
- Participate in ward rounds, staff meetings, training sessions, and continuous professional development programs.
Qualifications and Requirements:
- Registered Nurse (RN) with a current license from the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria.
- Registered Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse qualification is mandatory.
- Minimum of 2 years’ relevant nursing experience, preferably in a behavioural or psychiatric setting.
- Strong understanding of mental health conditions, behavioural interventions, and crisis management techniques.
- Excellent interpersonal, observation, and communication skills.
- Ability to remain calm and professional in high-pressure situations.
