Job Overview
The Location Scout is responsible for identifying, researching, and securing the perfect filming locations that align with the creative vision of a project. This role requires a keen eye for detail, strong networking skills, and the ability to work under tight deadlines while balancing logistical, budgetary, and aesthetic considerations.
Key Responsibilities
Identify potential filming locations based on script requirements, director’s vision, and production needs.
Use online databases, local contacts, and physical scouting to discover unique and feasible sites.
Maintain a well-organized location library (photos, videos, notes, and contact details).
Assess locations for technical feasibility (power access, parking, load-in routes, noise restrictions).
Note potential challenges (permits, neighborhood restrictions, weather risks, safety concerns).
Coordinate preliminary visits with directors, cinematographers, and production designers.
Initiate contact with property owners, businesses, and government agencies for availability and rates.
Secure temporary access agreements and liaise with local authorities for permits if needed.
Ensure compliance with insurance, contracts, and location release forms.
Quickly find backup options when locations fall through due to scheduling or budget constraints.
Troubleshoot last-minute issues (weather changes, neighbor complaints, access denials).
Essential
Skills & Qualifications
0-2+ years of experience in location scouting, production assisting, or a related field.
Strong visual storytelling ability—understanding how spaces translate to screen.
Excellent negotiation and interpersonal skills (diplomacy with property owners and officials).
Knowledge of local/state filming regulations, permits, and union guidelines (if applicable).
Ability to work long hours, travel frequently, and adapt to changing priorities.
