Job Summary
The Head, Clinical Services is responsible for providing strategic leadership and administrative oversight for all clinical services and medical operations of the hospital. The ideal candidate is responsible for ensuring the delivery of the highest standard of patient-centred care, promoting clinical excellence, and maintaining a culture of safety, quality, and continuous improvement. This role serves as the primary link between the hospital's medical staff and executive management, ensuring that all clinical activities align with the hospital's overall strategic objectives, mission, and values.
Main Duties
· Develop, implement, and monitor comprehensive clinical policies, procedures, and protocols in line with national standards and international best practices.
· Chair the Clinical Governance and Quality Assurance Committee, overseeing all clinical audit, patient safety, and quality improvement initiatives.
· Champion a robust system for monitoring clinical outcomes, patient satisfaction, and key performance indicators (e.g., infection rates, mortality rates, readmission rates).
· Ensure the hospital achieves and maintains all required accreditations from relevant healthcare bodies.
· Lead investigations into clinical incidents and sentinel events, ensuring that lessons are learned and implemented to prevent recurrence.
· Act as a key member of the hospital's executive management team, contributing to the development and execution of the hospital's strategic plan.
· Provide inspirational leadership to all clinical staff, fostering a collaborative and high-performance work environment.
· Lead the planning, development, and implementation of new clinical services and programmes based on community needs and financial viability.
· Promote a culture of evidence-based medicine, research, and clinical innovation within the hospital.
· Oversee the entire lifecycle of medical staff management, including recruitment, credentialing, privileging, onboarding, and performance appraisal in collaboration with Human Resources.
· Ensure all medical staff maintain valid licensure with the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) and meet continuing professional development requirements.
· Develop and implement mentorship and professional development programmes for medical staff.
· Manage medical staff relations, providing guidance and mediation for conflicts and addressing disciplinary issues in a fair and timely manner.
· Develop and manage the annual budget for all clinical departments and services, ensuring optimal and efficient allocation of resources.
· Collaborate with the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to monitor financial performance of clinical services and identify areas for cost optimisation without compromising quality of care.
· Ensure the effective management and utilisation of medical equipment, technology, and supplies.
· Work closely with Health Maintenance Organisations (HMOs) and other payers to ensure seamless service delivery and billing.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) or its equivalent from a recognized university.
- Fellowship of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria (FNPMCN), the West African College of Physicians (FWACP), or the West African College of Surgeons (FWACS), or an equivalent and recognized postgraduate fellowship.
- A current, valid, and unrestricted license to practice medicine in Nigeria issued by the MDCN.
- A Master's degree in Healthcare Management, Public Health (MPH), Business Administration (MBA), or a related field.
Experience:
- A minimum of Ten (10) years of progressive clinical experience post-qualification; Consultant/Specialist in any clinical field is an added advantage.
- At least five (5) years of experience in a senior administrative or clinical leadership role.
- Proven track record in clinical governance, quality improvement implementation, medical staff management, and budget administration.
- Exceptional leadership, influencing, and team-building skills with the ability to inspire and motivate a diverse clinical workforce.
- Strong analytical and strategic planning capabilities with a clear vision for clinical excellence.
- Superior interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills; ability to communicate complex clinical information to diverse audiences.
- Solid understanding of healthcare finance, budgeting, and resource management.
- Advanced problem-solving and decision-making skills, with the ability to remain calm and effective under pressure.
- In-depth knowledge of Nigerian healthcare laws, ethics, and regulatory landscape.
- Proficient in the use of Hospital Management Information Systems (HMIS/EMR) and standard office software.
