About the Role
The Country Manager – Nigeria will lead Sun Books Nigeria, a newly registered, independent nonprofit organization dedicated to eradicating illiteracy through innovative, technology-driven solutions for disadvantaged communities.
Backed by an international network of supporters, Sun Books Nigeria is at the forefront of integrating education, literacy, and renewable energy to reach children in remote and under-resourced areas. Our model uses solar-powered tablets preloaded with culturally relevant e-books and learning resources, enabling schools with little or no electricity or internet access to deliver quality education.
The Country Manager will oversee a team of around 7 staff members, including a Fundraising and Marketing Manager, Implementation Officers, and a Communications Team, as well as a large volunteer base. The role includes managing program and operational delivery, while serving as the primary representative to stakeholders in Nigeria and across the broader African region.
With the goal of expanding Sun Books’ impact throughout Africa, this position requires entrepreneurial leadership, exceptional management skills, outstanding communication abilities, and a proven track record in fundraising — including building trusted corporate relationships and securing significant funding.
This position reports directly to the Board and works closely with global advisors.
Key Responsibilities
Program Development, Implementation & Management
- Provide strategic leadership for the development, management, and implementation of all Sun Books Nigeria activities in line with our mission and local context.
- Oversee the delivery of solar-powered educational technology solutions to schools and communities, ensuring children gain literacy and digital learning skills.
- Work directly with teachers, community leaders, and educational authorities to support effective implementation and adoption of our literacy tools.
- Serve as the primary face and voice of the organization with stakeholders, media, conferences, funders, and the community.
- Lead and supervise the team to deliver high-quality programmatic, fundraising, and marketing outcomes.
- Identify and secure new funding streams, including corporate partnerships, major donors, and grants, with evidence of past success.
- Actively contribute to the planning and oversight of future Sun Books projects in other African countries.
- Develop and maintain consistent communication with the Board, partners, and global colleagues.
- Oversee accurate and timely reporting on activities and impact to all stakeholders.
Office Management
- Oversee financial, HR, and administrative operations in full compliance with internal policies and donor requirements.
- Direct and support on-the-ground teams to ensure efficient delivery of programs.
- Ensure all legal obligations are met, including organizational registration, employment law compliance, insurance, contracts, and regulatory requirements.
People Operations & Organizational Development
- Build and inspire a high-performing, mission-aligned team.
- Recruit, onboard, and develop staff to achieve organizational goals.
- Conduct regular performance appraisals, identify development needs, and ensure appropriate training is provided.
- Hold regular team meetings to assess progress and align on objectives.
- Foster an innovative, accountable, and collaborative culture.
Representation & External Relations
- Build and manage relationships with stakeholders, partners, funders, corporates, peer organizations, government agencies, and educational institutions.
- Represent Sun Books Nigeria at national and regional education and development events, forums, and conferences.
- Host donor and corporate partner visits to project sites to showcase impact and inspire continued support.
Qualifications
Required:
- Master’s degree in Marketing, Business, Management, or a related field.
- Minimum of 4 years’ relevant professional experience in NGO or social enterprise leadership.
- Proven entrepreneurial skills — able to grow an organization from early stage, identify opportunities, and execute strategic initiatives.
- Exceptional managerial, communication, and fundraising abilities, with a track record of securing significant funding.
- Demonstrated success in building trust and long-term partnerships with corporates, supported by clear examples.
- Strong leadership style — results-oriented, flexible, and empowering.
- Demonstrated experience in strategic planning, program management, and stakeholder engagement.
- Competence in monitoring and evaluation (M&E) to assess program effectiveness and impact.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in fast-changing environments.
- Passion for education, literacy, and leveraging technology for social impact.
- Excellent professional references demonstrating integrity, reliability, and leadership competence.
Highly Desirable:
- Experience working in other emerging markets.
- Knowledge of educational technology (ed-tech) solutions and renewable energy applications in community development.
- Proven success in regional or multi-country project management.
- Strong presentation skills and experience in representing organizations to media, conferences, and high-level partners.
- Advanced proposal writing and donor reporting skills.
